Dear Members of NODA,

I hope you are having an enjoyable summer.  Whether you are enjoying surf and sand, the mountains, or spending your vacation abroad, have a safe, restful and certainly well-deserved vacation away from the office.

While we may be slowing down to smell the roses just a bit, the business of dentistry doesn’t sleep, and items warranting your acknowledgement have been sent your way via our directors to the LDA, Dr. Kenneth G. Schott and Dr. F. Thomas Giacona, Jr..  Thanks to these individuals are in order for their requests that you contact your legislators for keeping them abreast your views on vital dental legislative concerns.  Please respond to these updates on issues affecting NODA by clicking on the link provided.  Once you have registered for the first time, all you need to do is click on “take action” and “submit” for future correspondence to your representatives.  We need to DELUGE them with a show of our unity and concern while they are in legislative sessions.

What is organized dentistry doing for you?  One recent item is that the FTC has again delayed implementation of the Red Flag Rule as requested by the ADA, in order to protect small businesses, including dentistry.  Also, the ADA is communicating with the EPA to say that dentistry is doing  everything possible to minimize environmental mercury, thus mandates on dentistry by the government should not be warranted.  Regarding the HB 1246…. (Dr. Schott to interpret for me once voted on.)

I want to thank President-elect, Dr. Laurie Moeller, who worked so hard to turn out a delightful crawfish boil.  The food, music, and artist on hand helped to conjure an evening of lively camaraderie.  Plan to attend next year, as Dr. George Arch takes over at the helm of this annual event!

Past NODA Executive Director, Mona Whittington has passed away.  She served NODA for 19 years, and we have sent flowers on behalf of the organization.  Those who worked closely with Mona will be writing a tribute in her honor in this same issue of NODA News.

Lastly, NODA has paid Dr. Debra C. Arnold as mandated by Judge Faulkner in a Summary Judgment dated April 29, 2010, in the 24th Judicial Court, Parish of Jefferson, Case # 637-780, as reported on page one of this issue.  The petition for damages was served to NODA on 10/30/06.  I want to thank the current Board, who spent many long hours dedicated to upholding their duty to the membership relative to this lawsuit.

The next issue of NODA News will be in September.  Have a safe summer.
